Steve Karnish is a respected technician and Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA). He has spent the majority of his career developing and trading mechanical approaches to the markets.
In 1975, Steve begin his trading career with Merrill Lynch. Immediately, he began to develop strategies to mechanically trade stocks and commodities. The following year, Steve began conducting trading and hedging seminars in conjunction with Michigan State University.
In 1982, working as a consultant to the emerging satellite data firms, Steve was responsible for the first momentum oscillators fed to subscribers in “real-time”. His pioneering work led to the position of Executive Vice President of First Financial Futures , in 1984, where Steve structured the Founders Fund I, a fund devoted to commodity futures.
In 1996, after acquiring his undergraduate degree at Washington State University, he pursued his MBA and began guest lecturing at WSU, University of Idaho, and the University Centre, in Brig Switzerland. Steve has taught “extended university” courses on technical analysis (U of I) and has also conducted sales and educational seminars for Equis International, Data Broadcasting Corp. and Paritech, International.
In 2000, Steve began to shift his research emphasis from commodities to equities. Steve began to modify Tushar Chande's work and designed a robust mechanical approach which trades many markets. Today, this approach is being applied to a large universe of equities, Single Stock Futures, Exchange Traded Funds and index futures (see Main Vein).
In 2002, Steve formed a research alliance, with other gifted technicians and programmers, to further refine the “momentum oscillator” approach. Also, in November of 2002, the National Futures Association approved Steve's Disclosure Document and Advisor Agreement, allowing him to manage accounts as a Commodity Trading Advisor.
Steve lives in Colorado with his wife Gladys and son James. His spare time is spent skiing, hiking, gardening, rafting and attending local cultural events.
